Comments on Mass Schedules

Dear Parishioners,

Thank you for participating in the parish wide meetings a few weeks ago in which the present Mass schedule was discussed.  There were two main questions raised in regard to the Sunday schedule: (1.)  If Saint Anne Church closes, will we keep the 7:00 a.m. Sunday Mass?  (2.)  Is the 5:45 p.m. Mass in Voluntown too late of a time?

In regard to the first question, no decision has been made yet in regard to the 7:00 a.m. Mass.

In regard to the 5:45 p.m. Mass time in Voluntown, the schedule cannot be adjusted any earlier.  Church regulations do not allow us to celebrate a vigil Mass earlier than 4:00 p.m.   With both a 4:00 p.m. Mass and a 4:30 p.m. Mass within the linked parishes, we cannot schedule another Mass earlier than 5:45 p.m.  In light of all of this, the present Mass schedule will continue.

There was also a discussion regarding the Holy Day Mass schedule.  Several people asked if we could try having a mid-day Mass at one of the three churches.  For the next holy day, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on August 15, we will try a different Mass schedule:  The vigil Mass will be the evening before at 7 p.m. in Jewett City.  On the Holy Day itself, there will be an 8:00 a.m. Mass in Voluntown, a 12 Noon Mass in Jewett City, and a 7:00 p.m. Mass in Preston.

When the parish staffs were putting the “tri-parish” calendar together on June 9, we also came to the question of Mass times for the Holy Day on January 1.  We decided that when time gets closer, we will ask you for which times you think will be best and then come up with a Mass schedule based upon your response.  Obviously, the Holy Day schedule is still very much a work in progress, but with your help, we will develop a schedule that works well.

Sincerely,

Fr. Ted Tumicki
